Creating Parameterized Variable Expression

The parameterized variable is a simple functionality, but very powerful. I have used it in many projects where I see the requirement to create multiple metrics with small variance in the calculation.

For example, calculate average orders over 30, 60, and 90 days.

For this requirement, instead of creating three separate calculations, you can create a parameterized variable expression and pass 30, 60, and 90 as a parameter to a variable.

With this approach, you do not have to write and maintain multiple calculations. Additionally, with little education, your end users can use it for ad-hoc analysis without writing a new calculation.

Let’s see how to create a parameterized variable. Working QVF is available to download at the bottom of this post. Also, it will be interesting to know if you have any use case in mind where this can be applied. Please share your thoughts in the comment.
